“Ryan Gruhn is the definition of a professional. After having personally experienced a different sport (football) at the highest level, I can honestly say there wasn’t a coach I encountered in the NFL that conducted a more organized and well thought out practice than Ryan does. This statement is true even when he is instructing beginners like myself. His attention to detail and ability to communicate technique to all levels of athletes is very unique.”

~ Justin Kurpeikis
Former NFL & PSU Football Player

“Ryan is world class trainer and a great mentor as well. Now that I’m training up here in Minnesota many of the same techniques and principles I practice everyday with Greg Nelson “a sought after world class trainer himself,” are the same principles I learned from Ryan while living in State College for this past year.”

“What impresses me most about Ryan Gruhn as an instructor is the way he combines training in the fundamentals with innovative fighting styles. He is always looking for new, cutting edge approaches to Muay Thai and Boxing and incorporating those approaches into the traditional styles. He is both a student and teacher of the martial arts, always researching, designing and incorporating new ideas and methods. He has an incredible ability to teach across number of levels and age groups, from beginners to up-and-coming top notch fighters. Ryan Gruhn is not only a teacher, practitioner and coach, but also a mentor. He trains his instructors to be teachers and assistants as well, a true testament to his devotion to the growth and continuation of martial arts. In addition, Ryan Gruhn has coached me in my last two fights, and the support and devotion of personal time and energy that he puts into his fighters is truly amazing. I am grateful to have him as a coach.”

“Ryan has an amazing amount of knowledge, talent, and experience in martial arts. His instruction is world class and his martial arts classes are a great learning experience as well as a great workout. But above all of his martial arts credentials, he is the best role model anyone could have. Personally he’s changed my life in the past 3 years and I hope he does the same for future young adults. I’ve fought under Ryan and I can’t explain how prepared he had me both mentally and physically. I remember walking into the ring/cage thinking there was no way I could lose the fight. He has a one of a kind way of training you to do things that make you a complete, well rounded, fighter with perfect fundamentals. He went from being my instructor to basically my big brother. The future is very bright for Sifu Gruhn!”

“Ryan Gruhn has been an extremely helpful and competent MMA coach. I really appreciated that he stressed learning and mastering the basic fighting techniques before moving onto more advanced MMA styles. His demonstrations and explanations of the material were easy to understand and then apply. He brings an enthusiasm and energy to the class that motivates and pushes you to be your best. Participating in the MMA program at has given me tools that I will be able to utilize for many years to come. I plan on returning next semester to train and my hat goes off to the Ryan.”

“I have been interested in mixed martial arts for a couple years now, but was concerned that an MMA class would be full of tough guys and meat heads. I am more concerned with learning techniques and having an outlet in which to escape the stressful culture that is my professional life. During my first semester I have been thrilled with the environment that Kru Gruhn fostered from the first day of class. He made sure that we have a collective attitude where we help each other learn while enjoying each day of class. Kru Gruhn taught me that the human body is a unique machine, because the “harder you work it, the stronger it gets.”

“A year ago, I would never have seen myself as an avid martial artist. The amount of experience present in Ryan’s teaching is unmatched and yet he manages to translates it perfectly for beginners and eventually into intermediate/advanced material. The teaching is very personal and you aren’t just a face in a crowd. The amount of dedication and willpower that you put into your training will always be matched by the instructors. Without a doubt, one of the best martial arts programs on the east coast.”

“I have had the pleasure of training with Ryan for many years now and he is the real deal. To get martial arts training remotely comparable to this you would have to live in New York or California or go overseas. To have a resource like Ryan Gruhn in State College is a goldmine!!! No matter whether you are training to be a fighter, learning to defend yourself, or just trying to improve your fitness level this is the man to train under.”

“I am a student at Penn State, and I have been training in Thai Boxing under Kru Ryan Gruhn for a year and a half. In addition, I have also taken boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and reality-based martial arts. The training is without a doubt the best available in the area, and I would recommend any of these classes to anyone who wants to improve his or her fitness, confidence, and self defense skills, as well as to those who would like to fight for sport. My favorite classes are Thai Boxing, the “king of the ring” of striking, and reality-based martial arts, which focuses on no-rules situations and weapon techniques.”

~ Jake Sibel

“Ryan is my first and only boxing and Thai boxing instructor. I had been back and forth about wanting to try Muay Thai for a while up until I started training with Ryan. My only regret now is that I didn’t start sooner. For being someone who has the ability to whoop some ass if needed, Ryan is a very grounded individual who is approachable and willing to chat about anything. Although there are students in his class with varying experience levels, Ryan keeps it simple enough for the beginners yet also manages to challenge the veterans. His dedication and preparedness are evident from the emails I get throughout the day and night pertaining to new techniques and examples he finds on the internet. His classes are packed with information and conditioning to the extent an hour will go by in no time. Taking classes with Ryan is a great experience for those looking to increase their martial arts knowledge and also for those looking for a great workout.”

“Ryan Gruhn,
Everyday I walk onto the mats knowing that I will leave a better fighter, because I am really learning from the best. The Muay Thai and Boxing classes have greatly improved my attitude, my confidence, and provided me with a release from everyday stress. The class is run very well, it is a lot of fun, and I really look forward to training for a long time.”

“In the brief time I was at Central PA Mixed Martial Arts I was impressed with the organization of the classes; it is quite difficult to accommodate various levels of fighters simultaneously. I think the program is run well and Ryan takes the time to inspect each individual fighter’s progress.”

“Training with Ryan Gruhn has been the experience of a lifetime. In one year I have gone from knowing nothing about the art of boxing to being in love with the sport. It is because of Ryan that I have changed my lifestyle to be able to train 7 days a week. He has given me the confidence to know that I can step in the ring with anyone and hold my own. The special thing about training with Ryan Gruhn is the angles which he teaches. He doesnt just teach conventional boxing but rather starts with the basics and then teaches you to build on them with tactics not usually taught by the average boxing instructor. I know that when I step in the ring I know more ways to accomplish my goals then the other man. I encourage everyone to work with Ryan Gruhn for even one day and not only will you understand what I am talking about, but you will be fully hooked on whatever art your trying to learn.”

“You guys really run a great program. The instructors are all top notch and seem to really want the students to learn. I don’t think I’ve even heard of a martial arts program attached to a full gym before and I’ve gotta say it’s an absolutely amazing idea. Keep up the good work!”

“Ryan is one of the sharpest instructors and dedicated martial artists I’ve ever met. His motivation to teach is superb, and he readily adapts himself to all manner of students, regardless of skill level and background. His classes help keep me physically and mentally fit for my duties in the Air National Guard and have helped me look at fighting, self defense, and leadership in completely new ways. His enthusiasm and expertise, with open hands, grappling, and weapons is outstanding. Make no mistake, he’ll work you hard, push you to your limits and help you grow past them.”

“Ryan was my first kickboxing teacher and was very approachable and easy to learn from. He broke down the basics so it was simple to understand how to take it step by step in the correct manner. He stressed that perfect practice makes perfect and he helped me improve from lesson to lesson. I am looking forward to continuing my training with him and would recommend his classes to anyone interested in learning a martial art. ”

“I have been extremely pleased with the Youth Martial Arts progam. I love how Ryan incorporates conditioning movement in a fun way so that the kids have no idea they are ”working out” and ”getting fit.” I am always impressed when it comes tp the time for the kids to concentrate and focus on technique. They are ready to learn. I wish more of these concepts could be used in school classrooms! Although, I do think it has carried over into my son’s school day, and he is better able to concentrate when he is regularly attending class.”

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my instructor, Ryan Gruhn. Over the years I have been involved in many challenging sports activities including: trad rock climbing, marathons, freestyle wrestling and martial arts. The personal instruction I receive from Ryan Gruhn has been the best I have experienced in any of my endeavors. His teaching techniques and knowledge of the various forms of self defense and martial arts are truly impressive. Highly recommended.”

“Ryan Gruhn not only knows his stuff, he knows how to convey it to his students. He not only makes sure his students learn the fundamentals of boxing, he teaches them aspects of boxing that are neglected by other gyms. After fighting with Ryan in my corner I can say two things with complete certainty:
1) There is no one else I would rather have in my corner.
2) He is right about everything he ever says in class.I do not believe there is anyone you can learn more from than Ryan because of his unique perspective and approach to teaching boxing. He will turn you into a truly well rounded boxer. I would never bet against one of Ryan’s fighters.
Thank You Ryan.”

“Coming from a grappling oriented background can make it challenging to learn and fully understand the mechanics and tactics of powerful standup martial arts. Ryan Gruhn knows what he teaches and is able to instruct it in a manner that made the transition very fluent. Ryan put me through vigorous training sessions and pushed me to a level that I had only been to during highschool wrestling. Constant pressure to know and fully understand proper technique will allow me to become a powerful fighter in the ring when Ryan feels that I am ready to do so. I believe I have become more aggressive with each session, constantly wanting more. My focus while training and outside of the gym have also increased dramatically. I felt the training and knowledge he was able to provide was well worth the hour and a half drive to and from State College every time I was scheduled. Ryan is by far one of the best insructors I have dealt with and highly recommend him to anyone looking for an amazing instructor able to take you as far as you can go.”

“Ryan Gruhn is truly the most fun, knowledgeable, and devoted instructor I have ever seen. You will not only learn to become an excellent martial artist and athlete, but you will have fun doing it. Ryan keeps martial arts exciting with new material, while also drilling the basics for mastery. If you want to learn excellent martial arts techniques and do so without the big egos of most martial arts teachers, call Ryan. I have been a martial artist for over 15 years, and I have studied with many excellent instructors. Ryan is the best.”

“Ever since I joined Ryan Gruhn’s FMA program, I’ve been wanting more and more to get into better shape. I wanted to do this so that I could expand my abilities and learn more of the Martial Art that I am taking. FMA is a great program and offers self defense for situations that could happen anywhere, any day, to any one. Also, If you practice until you get things down, it gives you more of a confidence in yourself that you will be able to overcome more and harder obstacles. Taking FMA with Ryan Gruhn has been a great experience and I would encourage others to join this class too.”

“I signed up for Boxing on October 9th. To date (June 2007), I have honored my commitment by missing very few lessons, progressed into a second semester of Advanced Boxing under your instruction, and I have dropped an additional 45 pounds totaling a 26% body weight reduction within the last year! I can’t even explain how much my involvement has further boosted my self confidence and athletic ability, not to mention changed my life. Ryan – you are an amazing instructor. The camaraderie and respect you instill in everyone at Fitness is insurmountable. Thank you for providing me the opportunity to be a student under your instruction, and I look forward to many more lessons in the future.”

“I have been one of Ryan’s boxing students for over a year. I am currently preparing to compete in the ring as an amateur boxer, having been thoroughly educated in boxing techniques, fitness, and strategy by the coaches at the gym. Ryan Gruhn teaches the advanced boxing classes, which are very physically demanding, and extremely educative. Through full contact sparring I have had the chance to test the boxing skills I have learned at the gym, and found that Ryan has taught me very effective means of protecting myself and executing aggressive ring strategy. Ryan teaches us some very intelligent boxing tactics, and hammers on our fundamentals until they come automatically. Having observed amateur boxing bouts involving fighters from many different gyms, I believe that Ryan teaches us superior, yet simple boxing technique that will make me a fearsome amateur boxer.”

I started skeptical but realized after a few lessons that Ryan was a wealth of knowledge and that I needed to pay attention and as the sign in the gym says “absorb what is useful.” The atmosphere was very comfortable and I’ve never been afraid to ask questions. My experience was great and I’m looking forward to taking more classes in the fall.”

“I think your training curricula is extremely effective. Teaching us all fighting techniques briefly and following up on it throughout the semester. I work best with brevity and repetition, and you have been consistant in this approach. In the past two years, you have allowed me enough time to practice at home, and refine the grappling and sparring in class. I am doing things I never thought my body could do, and I believe with even more repetition, I will get even better.
Thank you.”

Often, I’ll get emails at random times of the day/night from him with links to online training materials and video clips. For me, this is proof that Ryan Gruhn is truly dedicated to what he does. “After studying under Ryan Gruhn for a year, I have definitely noticed an improvement in my strength, endurance, general level of fitness, and knowledge of a discipline that was previously unfamiliar to me. It is obvious he has a gift for instruction. Everyone goes at their level within in class and its amazing. We get an awesome workout and at the same time have fun and are learning a martial art. “Ryan,
Past couple of years have been great knowing you as a person and as an instructor. You have taught me so much about a self-discipline in martial arts–mentally and physically. You definitely made me realize that martial art is a mental game, rather than “beating up someone else” (which many people think that’s what the martial art is ALL about). You have been my support to push my physical level to become a better fighter. After 3-4 years of working with you, it’s so hard for me to let go the bond that I have. I’m so glad that you were my first official boxing instructor! Thanks so much!”

“Ryan is an incredibly gifted teacher.  “Fun, friends, and fitness” isn’t just a slogan, it is a fundamental commitment that shapes every aspect of the learning environment.  After each class, when I asked my 5 year old what was her favorite part, she always responded: “Everything!”

“This Spring my five-year-old son and I started taking private family lessons with Ryan Gruhn. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed each lesson, and Ryan Gruhn makes each one challenging, educative and fun. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how easily he makes the lessons appropriately challenging for both me and Owen, despite our obvious differences in size, coordination and athletic experience. I also was amazed at how well Owen could execute the various striking and parrying techniques we’ve been learning. Ryan Gruhn teaches and demonstrates these techniques in such a clear, simple and straightforward manner that it’s just as easy for Owen to understand it, as it is for me. His constant encouragement and diligent attention to helping us perform techniques to our best ability is invaluable. Not only has Owen been learning about his own physical capabilities, but the lessons also have focused on teaching him the values of respect, patience and determination. Perhaps above all, the combination of teaching, mild cardio and games make each lesson fun for the entire family.”

“My son, Alex started in the Youth Martial Arts program after two weeks of the summer camp there. What impressed me at the start was the nurturing attitudes of the instructors, in particular, the head instructor Ryan Gruhn. All members of the class are encouraged in a positive manner whether they are performing a move with correct form or whether they are in the process of improving it. Regardless of whether Ryan has suggested a correction for the first time or the nth time, it is always in a tone of voice and manner that is encouraging and confidence building. In the class, all students are improving themselves and not competing with others. In terms of safety, all activities are well supervised with an strong emphasis on correct form rather than speed or power and there is no free form sparring at this level. We have been in the program for one year and through two belt testings and are as happy as from the start. The Youth Martial Arts program is an excellent program for building strong bodies and strong spirits. Furthermore, with its short 6 month enrollment program, I would highly recommend it to those looking to try out a marital arts program or some sort of fitness program for their child.”

“Emily enjoys attending class and showing her family what she has learned. It has made her more confident and more willing to try new activities. She is having a great time and getting physically stronger and improving her gross motor skills. In addition to learning the actual martial arts, she is also learning the life long skills of respect, courtesy, patience, perseverance, good attitude, cooperation and hard work. When I asked her to describe YMA she said it is a “lot of fun”. That answer says quite a bit. I hope she stays with this fantastic program as it will benefit her in all aspects of her life.
