Advanced Footwork for Boxing, Muay Thai & MMA

Posted in Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai on October 11th, 2008

Many people complain that it’s hard to hit a moving target, . . .this is true. However, being able to move and strike at the same time requires some technical footwork. Below is a series of footwork techniques which allow one to keep up with an opponent who is circling:

Congrats to Matt Isenberg for passing his Assistant Instructor / Level I Muay Thai Test on September 24tt 2008! The test consisted of a thorough demonstration of boxing and muay thai technique along with the Ram Muay (Ceremony) and two rounds of kicking (60 kicks & 35 knees). Thanks to everyone from the team for helping out with the test! It’s great to have such an awesome team willing to help out their fellow teammates!

Upward Elbow

Posted in Muay Thai on May 19th, 2008

In class on Saturday our focus was on a combo starting with the upward elbow. In the fight below, Anderson is south paw and Tony Fryklund is regular lead. This sets up Anderson with the perfect recipe for the inside angle. Since Tony covers up by putting his hands on the sides of his head and bends at the waist he is putting his head in the direct line for a knee or elbow. As I mentioned in class, this elbow can be done either in regular lead or false lead. It is very hard to perform in “off-lead.” The elbow could be replaced by an upward hammer fist and both flow well with the upper cut being directly behind the initial strike. Follow with a hook or cross after the upper cut, add two cups of flower, stir.

GSP – Lead Superman Punch

Posted in Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai on April 27th, 2008

I found a great .gif on the Underground Forum of the GSP vs. Serra fight where GSP throws a Superman punch which sets up a low leg round kick. The cool thing about the way GSP throws this combo is that the Superman punch is off the lead so instead of it being a cross, it’s a jab. I honestly don’t think I ever thought of the Superman punch being thrown off the lead as it was always meant to be a set up off of the round kick.
