Balisong Demo – Manila, PH January 1992

Posted in Filipino Martial Arts on January 7th, 2008

This was taken by my late instructor Bill Gebhardt. If I can remember correctly Sifu Gebhardt ended up buying the knives that the saleman was using. One was given as gifts to one of his friends and the other one is MIA.

Side Rant: We once found the missing one of them at the gym along time ago on Sifu’s desk. I had a hard time resisting so I picked it up to take a look at it. It had what looked to be someones name etched on the brass portion of the handel. At the time we didn’t know much about the knife and where it had come from. A few other were in the room at this time and we were having the hardest time figuring out who PHIL was. . .

My late instructor Bill Gebhardt and current instructor Kevin Seaman competed in the world championships in Manila, January of 1992.  These are some clips of the demonstrations of the various styles and systems from the days prior to the competition.  As I dissect the clips I am going to post more information on what grandmasters are shown and where in the clips they can be found.  If you have any information on the clips please feel free to email me @ info@realcontactfighter.com

Stick Mount from Cross Body

Posted in Filipino Martial Arts on December 23rd, 2007

With all stick grappling the first order of business is always stick/weapon control. If we do not have control over the weapon we could find ourselves looking to set up a submission while getting hit by our opponents weapon. I would even go as far as to say that wrist / hand control and monitoring should be in order because even if they don’t have a weapon in hand one could always come out at some point. With that said, because stickgrappling usually only involves one stick per person at most, and because 90% of the population is right handed, our main focus here is the right side.

Assistant Instructorship in The Filipino Martial Arts – Wes Auker & Mike Norrell

Posted in Filipino Martial Arts on October 7th, 2007

Congrats to Wes Auker & Mike Norrell!
After several years of devotion, studying and applying the Filipino Martial Arts with Guro Gruhn their persistence has brought them to the level of Assistant Instructor. Both Norrell and Auker passed the 2 1/2 hour test on Saturday October 6th, 2007. The test consisted of multiple sections of the Filipino Martial Arts including single stick, double stick, knife and empty hand. We are happy to have our newly certified assistant instructors on board and will look forward to having their skills and knowledge available to all of the Filipino Martial Artists in our Kali program!

Gumagalang!

This Weekend Mr. Gruhn fought in the Dog Brothers – “Gathering of the Pack” in Los Angeles, California. The day consisted of knife, stick, staff, shocknife & one cattle prod fight which featured Mr. Gruhn. At the end of the gathering Guro Marc “Crafty Dog” Denny – the guiding force of the Dog Brothers knighted Mr. Gruhn “Dog” and officially welcomed him as one of the tribe. We are glad to have a Dog Brother now on staff at Central PA Mixed Martial Arts.
