Local student is a knockout

Nora Martin, a 2007 graduate of State College Area High School, is among a group of women who are proving that boxing isn’t just for the boys.

Martin, 20, won the 178- pound class title at the Pennsylvania Golden Gloves amateur boxing championships on Feb. 28 in Punxsutawney. This was her first competition, she said, and only about four women took part in the championships.

A sophomore majoring in food science at Penn State, Martin said she took up boxing a couple of years ago. She had tried other sports, and boxing just seemed like more fun. But, she noted, she’s found that most other women don’t take to the sport as well.

“I think it has to be something you really want to do and not have to want to tell people you’re a fighter,” she said.

Advanced Footwork for Boxing, Muay Thai & MMA

Posted in Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai on October 11th, 2008

Many people complain that it’s hard to hit a moving target, . . .this is true. However, being able to move and strike at the same time requires some technical footwork. Below is a series of footwork techniques which allow one to keep up with an opponent who is circling:

GSP – Lead Superman Punch

Posted in Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai on April 27th, 2008

I found a great .gif on the Underground Forum of the GSP vs. Serra fight where GSP throws a Superman punch which sets up a low leg round kick. The cool thing about the way GSP throws this combo is that the Superman punch is off the lead so instead of it being a cross, it’s a jab. I honestly don’t think I ever thought of the Superman punch being thrown off the lead as it was always meant to be a set up off of the round kick.

Real Contact Fight Team – Clinch Notes

Here is a clip from Greg Nelson’s Clinch DVD that show several of the counters to clinch that we have been working over the past few weeks. Greg is one crafty individual with a lot to offer, if you have a chance consider purchasing his clinch DVD which shows a lot of the similar clinch material and counters as Ajarn Chai has shown all of us.

Real Contact Fight Team Practice – 1-15-2007 – Video Notes

Posted in Boxing, Muay Thai on January 16th, 2008

First off here is a clip of Greg Nelson from the Eric Paulson Camp 2005 doing the combinations we have been working for the past few weeks.  I first saw Greg do similar combos back about five years ago and they have a ton of validity so we will continue to use them. Here they are:

Secondly, here is the Scott Smith / Pete Sell fight which shows what we have been simulating with flash knockouts.  You need to make sure you keep the lead hand up when throwing the cross so this doesn’t happen:

Boxing Stance

Here is a PDF download I made a while back that I decided to post for download.  It points out the basics of the boxing stance.  Please remember that this is a basic foundation and that things can and will change depending on “situations change variables.”
